Bluetooth RFID reader increases mobility

Cathexis Innovations Inc. , a Canadian provider of Radio Frequency Identification products and services, has launched the first mobile, integrated Bluetooth-enabled RFID reader. The pen-sized reader increases mobility and use for close-proximity RFID applications.

The product, called IDBlue, has the ability to read RFID tags without ever being linked to a computing device. The Bluetooth was designed to track and identify specific items, such as drug doses and trials in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry.

Cathexis claims that IDBlue eliminates the need for human intervention in theses processes. The company says IDBlue can safely monitor patients, medication and equipment in real-time while eliminating concerns about counterfeit prescription drugs.

"Typical RFID handheld readers are bulky, heavy and cumbersome, while the IDBlue is small and lightweight enough to fit in your pocket," said Steve Taylor, CEO of Cathexis. " We are offering a solution that is perfect for those jobs that require a high degree of mobility and accuracy from the reader."

WaveMark Inc. , a provider of clinical inventory management products to hospitals, currently offers IDBlue. WaveMark’s says that their technology enables hospitals, surgical centers and manufacturers to control and manage the flow of high-value, consumable medical devices. The use of RFID allows the company to collect and report real-time information in a hands-free environment.

"The IDBlue reader from Cathexis is a perfect match for WaveMark,” said John Wass, CEO of WaveMark. “The technology has the potential to help unleash a whole new generation of RFID applications. The product's unique form factor is ideal for applications like our RFID inventory management system, which is also available on the mobile platform.”

Hack-A-Mac contest and the Mac faithful

There is plenty of righteous indignation around the blogosphere this week in response to the CanSecWest "hack-a-Mac" contest. Of course, the inevitable happened, and a software engineer named Shane Macaulay, along with his associate Dino Dai Zovi, won the prize, hacking into a MacBook through a zero-day security flaw in Safari. The response varies from "say it ain't so!" to just plain "it ain't so."

Unfortunately, regardless of platform, denial is the biggest security flaw of all. Corporate America is full of IT managers who put up a firewall and some anti-virus software then forget they exist, believing that's all they need. Managers sometimes get lulled into a false sense of security because they think their platforms are unhackable, or they think their firewall will provide absolute protection under all circumstances, or that their internal users are trustworthy when they are not. Security czars will tell you, the best policy is to trust nothing and no one. That means Macs, too.

Some Windows cheerleaders are blowing raspberries to Apple cheerleaders, noting that just before the contest, Apple released a security update that repaired 25 vulnerabilities, and that this was the fourth security update for the Mac OS this year. In all fairness, I can't fault Apple for releasing the security updates. Operating systems are huge monstrosities of code, and it's virtually impossible to foretell all possible flaws and vulnerabilities ahead of time. Flaws are inevitable. They are inevitable on Windows, and they are inevitable on the Mac. I am not worried that Apple released security patches. On the contrary, I would be very worried if they had not. Macaulay agrees. In an interview with eWeek, he said, "there's nothing special about one platform that makes it impervious to vulnerabilities." In fact, Macaulay said in the interview that he is primarily a Mac user.

That there have been security patches simply means that the Mac engineers are doing their jobs. The Mac marketing people on the other hand, trivialize security, which can be dangerous. If you believe your platform is impenetrable, you will get lazy. You'll create simple passwords that can be guessed. Maybe you won't bother to tighten up your firewall policies, or won't bother to get the latest antivirus updates. And once you go down that slippery slope, you're going to get hacked. Yes, even if you're running a Mac.

The chatter in response to the CNet blog on the contest is regrettably, full of denial, with participants claiming that it was not a legitimate flaw, it didn't happen, and Apple is God and therefore infallible.

There are fewer attacks against the Mac than there are against Windows PCs. And while it's fair to say that Apple does a good job on security, the main reason that there are fewer attacks on the Mac OS is that there are fewer Macs. Attackers are for the most part, in it for the money. They are opportunistic, and will go for the biggest return, and there's simply less financial reward involved in hacking Macs. If Macs were the dominant platform in business, they would be the primary target, and the illusion of airtight security currently enjoyed by the Mac, would fall to Windows PCs by default.

Microsoft Siemens Partner on Auto Entertainment, Navigation

Microsoft and Siemens have teamed up to develop in-car entertainment and navigation products, a market expected to grow by about $16 billion by 2012, reports Reuters.

The companies said their first effort will be a multimedia platform to make it easier for consumers to connect devices such as mobile phones and music players. And they said they will deliver products faster than the normal product development cycle in the automotive industry, according to an Associated Press story in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

The Redmond, Wash., software maker also is taking up residence in Seattle in a Paul Allen project on Lake Union. Frustrated with the area’s transportation woes, it’s also starting its own employee bus service, the Post-Intelligencer reports. Interestingly enough, the buses’ Wi-Fi system will feature Linux routers.
For its Patch Tuesday update, Microsoft will issue five bulletins to fix flaws in Windows Vista, MSN Messenger and Visual Studio, reports InformationWeek.
And the South African site IOL reports Microsoft has partnered with Japanese humanoid maker Tmsuk to develop cutting-edge robots. Originally focused on factory automation, Tmsuk also has developed robots for other uses, such as the disaster relief robot that helped clear rubble after a powerful earthquake hit Japan in July.

Butuh kartu nama dalam waktu singkat? Aplikasi pengolah kata bisa membantu membuatkannya untuk Anda. Desainnya memang sederhana, tetapi Anda tetap bisa membuatnya tampil profesional.

Langkah-langkahnya tidak rumit. Anda tinggal memanfaatkan kotak dialog Envelopes and Labels. Agar lebih menarik, Anda bisa menyisipkan gambar dengan fasilitas Insert dan membuat pinggiran (border) yang bergaya.

Kartu nama tersebut bisa langsung dicetak atau disimpan dulu desainnya untuk dicetak lain waktu. Kalau Anda kurang yakin dengan kemampuan printer yang Anda miliki, bawa saja file desain kartu nama Anda ke percetakan terdekat.

Tentu saja lebih menyenangkan bila Anda memiliki sebuah printer yang handal. Anda tinggal membeli kertas dan mencetak sendiri buah karya Anda di rumah.

Dalam tutorial singkat berikut, kami menggunakan Microsoft Word 2003.

1.Buka program Word. Pada menu Tools, pilih Letters and Mailings dan klik Envelopes and Labels.

2.Klik tab Labels. Pada kotak Address, masukkan informasi yang ingin Anda tampilkan di kartu nama, misalnya nama dan jabatan Anda; nama perusahaan; alamat dan nomor telepon; dan alamat e-mail.

3. Sekarang, mari kita mengatur font dan posisi teks di kartu nama. Klik kanan di kotak Address untuk menampilkan menu shortcut. Klik Font atau Paragraph. Atur jenis, ukuran dan tampilan font, serta letak teks.

4. Biarkan opsi default yang ada di bagian Print: Full page of the same label. Dengan opsi tersebut dalam keadaan terpilih, Anda bisa mencetak beberapa lembar kartu nama sekaligus dalam satu lembar kertas khusus untuk kartu nama (utamanya produk Avery).

5. Klik Options dan di bawah Printer information, pilih jenis printer yang Anda gunakan. Sedangkan di bawah Label products, biarkan setting default-nya (Avery Standard).

6. Pilih nomor kartu di bagian Product number. Pilih salah satu dari jenis (Type) Business Card yang tersedia.

7. Klik tombol Details untuk menampilkan kotak dialog tipe kartu nama yang Anda pilih. Lewat kotak dialog ini Anda bisa mengatur ukuran lembar kertas untuk mencetak kartu. Di bagian Page size, klik kotak daftar yang ada dan pilih ukuran kertasnya, misalnya A4 (21 x 29,7cm).

8. Perubahan ukuran ini mengharuskan Anda mengisikan nama di bagian Label name. Klik OK dan kartu Anda akan dimasukkan sebagai bagian dari kategori Other/Custom oleh Word. Klik OK lagi untuk keluar dari kotak dialog Label Options.

9. Jika Anda ingin langsung mencetak kartu, masukkan lembaran kertas ke printer dan klik tombol Print di kotak dialog Envelopes and Labels.

10. Namun bila Anda ingin menyimpan desain kartu dan dicetak kapan-kapan, tekan tombol New Document. Word pun akan menampilkan kartu nama Anda (Word memberi nama Labels pada dokumen yang belum disimpan). Klik Save di toolbar.

Sony Corp., Selasa(10/5) kemarin memperkenalkan Laptop pertamanya yang terintegrasi dengan teknologi selular untuk dapat mengakses Internet melalui koneksi berbasis nirkabel.

Tidak tanggung - tanggung, Sony Vaio T350 yang diluncurkan dengan harga US$2.199 ini dilengkapi dengan modem internal berbasis teknologi Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) yang untuk saat ini bekerja dalam lingkup jaringan Cingular Wireless Amerika. Entah mengapa, meski banyak operator yang sudah menerapkan standar EDGE di berbagai negara tetapi Sony lebih memilih perusahaan kerjasama SBC Communications Inc., dan BellSouth itu sebagai mitranya.

Dengan berat tidak lebih dari 1,5 kilogram (tanpa power adapter), Sony Vaio menjadi sangat nyaman untuk dibawa - bawa. Laptop ini juga menawarkan koneksi data jarak pendek dengan teknologi Wi-Fi dan Bluetooth, sebuah standar yang umumnya sudah ada pada Laptop kelas Middle-end saat ini. Namun Vaio T350 tidak dapat terhubung dengan jaringan Cingular melalui teknologi Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) milik Cingular, untuk hal ini nampaknya pengguna harus merogoh kocek tambahan untuk membeli tambahan modul UMTS.

EDGE sendiri menawarkan kecepatan koneksi data dua kali lebih cepat dari modem dial-up biasa. Sementara Cingular mengklaim teknologi UMTS yang dimilikinya mampu melakukan transmisi data antara 400 sampai 700 kilobit per detik.

Sebagai bentuk kerjasama dengan Cingular, Sony menawarkan kepada pelanggannya beberapa paket langganan koneksi internet, diantaranya paket akses tanpa batas seharga US$80 dan paket koneksi sampai 50 Megabit perbulan

We all know that the big Affiliate Networks including Commission Junction, Linkshare and Tradedoubler are having problems with their links being blocked by third party programs such as Norton Antivirus. This is causing major problems in the Affiliate Marketing World as computers which run these program can not access click through links or banners, therefore not being able to produce a sale for Merchants who are promoted through these networks. By using a 'Jump Script, we can bypass this issue.


This PHP Jump script is ideal for the smaller site, but if you are designing a large site which utilises a datafeed from the Merchant, then we will cover this next time.


Overview


The scenario is that we have a website which we want to use to promote products and services from the major Affiliate Networks such as, Commission Junction (CJ), Tradedoubler, Linkshare, Affiliate Window, Affiliate Future, UK Affiliates and any in-house affiliate program. This guide can be used for all of these network affiliate links to hide them.


Getting Started


For this guide I will use a website I designed for mobile phones as a referance so you can see the jump script in action. The website in its entirety can be found at www.stevedawson.com/mobiles/ I have left it 'live and online' to give you an idea of how this guide and script comes together.


For this example we are going to use 2 of the UK's biggest Affiliate Networks, TradeDoubler (www.tradedoubler.com) and Affiliate Window (www.affiliatewindow.co.uk) and of course, their Mobile Phone Merchants and subsequent affiliate links.


Grabbing one of the Merchants Links, Just Phones on AffiliateWindow we get the following:

http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=97&id=38362 - Clicking this link will first take you Affiliate Window to log the click and then to the Merchants website, which in our case is Just Phones.


Now this link does not look too pretty when the visitor does a 'mouse over' on the link. We want something shorter and snazzier and not forgetting the fact to hide the URL so the visitor does not know it's an affiliate link.


We can turn this long URL into: "jump.php?m=Just Phones" so the actual HTML link code will look like
Just Phones and the user will be directed to the correct URL by the PHP Jump script.


The PHP Affiliate Jump Script

This very basic affiliate jump script is made up of the following:





Breaking the script down we get:
$m - This is the ID that determines which link the user is directed to. For instance if m=Just Phones then the user would be directed to the AffiliateFuture URL or if m=UKPhoneShop then the user would be directed to Tradedoubler URL Affiliate Link.
$link - This is the Affiliate URL we want to hide from our website visitors.
header() - This is a simple PHP redirect tag which simply directs the browser to the requested page. The requested page for us will be the $link URL.

Note - The first line with an empty '$m' variable is just a simple direct to our website homepage. This is to prevent a user typing in jump.php in the browser bar and expecting to be sent somewhere. This URL can be changed to an Affiliate Link if required.


If you visit www.stevedawson.com/mobiles/ (opens in new window) on the left hand menu at the bottom you will see a list of Mobile Retailers. All these links are 'Jump Links'created with the process above to prevent any visitors from seeing or reading the affiliate link.


Putting it all Together

In our Mobile Phone example site we have created hidden affiliate links from the links supplied by the network, thus inturn direct the visitor to the Merchant site without them seeing the URL.

So to get the process together we need to know the affiliate link and a '$m' value. So taking the merchant Just Phones, we have the following information:


Affiliate Link = http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=97&id=38362 This affiliate link should be entered into the PHP Jump Script file for the value $link:

{$link = "http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=97&id=38362";}


We know what the Merchant is called, Just Phones, so it is easy to use this as the '$m' value to activate the Jump Script.

Now we have to create the actual link that is clicked on our website navigation Just Phones. This is where the value of $m in the jump script is assigned.


This process can be repeated as many times as required in the jump script as long as the '$m' value is different each time. If you are promoting Commission Junction, BFAST or Linkshare it is virtually a must that you use a jump script of some kind to protect your affiliate commissions.


Another thing to note is that you had better make sure that the Merchant you are creating 'jump links' for permits you to do so. Failure to check on this could lead to commissions not being paid even if you generate sales!


Testing the Script

If you create any kind of jump script for affiliate links on your websites, ALWAYS check that the links are working correctly and are logging the click through. An easy way to accomplish this is to click the affiliate link yourself and then login to your affiliate control panel for that Merchant and check the stats to see if the click has been logged. Don't be too impatient, as a few affiliate programs don't update the click stats until the next day. Ensure you remember to check the clicks other wise you may not get your due commission on any sales made though that link if it does not function correctly.

How do put AdSense on blog?

Note: This article assumes you are using a classic template. On a Layouts-enabled blog, just add a new page element and select the AdSense option.

Adding AdSense to your blog is easy. Go to the Template tab in Blogger and you'll see an "AdSense ads" tab below it:


If you don't have an AdSense account already, you can sign up for it right here within Blogger. Just enter a valid email address, choose a password, fill in some contact information (so you can get paid!) and then Blogger will register your account for you right away. If you do have an account already, just use the "sign in" link instead.


Once you've completed the sign-up form, or logged in to an existing account, you'll see a special preview version of your template, showing your blog as it will look with your new ads:


Using the menus above the preview, you can easily change the size, shape, and color of your ads, without ever needing to edit the code directly. The color menu has some preset color schemes, but also some flexible options that try to match, contrast, or blend with whatever template you happen to be using. Try them all out and see which setting works best.


Once you've decided how you'd like it to look, just save the changes and republish your blog. Then go check your email.

While you were deciding on layouts and colors, you probably received a confirmation email from AdSense. Find that email and click on the link it gives you to confirm your email address. Be sure to read the rest of the confirmation email as well, since it will contain other information on finishing the registration and approval process. Until your email address is confirmed and your AdSense application is approved, your ads will only show public service announcements (PSAs) rather than targeted ads. Since you don't get revenue from PSAs, you'll want to be sure to do this soon, so the AdSense bot can crawl your site and determine appropriate ads to show.

And now you're done! Congratulations -- you've got AdSense!

Notes:
There may be a bit of a delay before the AdSense bot gets to your site and you start getting targeted ads, though that should happen within 48 hours. Just be patient and it will get there in time.
This feature does not currently provide a way of moving the ads, though the default location used is one that tends to provide the best results. If you would like to move it elsewhere, such as to your sidebar, you will need to edit your template code directly. See How to put AdSense in your blog's sidebar for more details.
You can see how well your ads are doing by checking the 'Reports' tab on the AdSense website to look at your Ad performance. Keep in mind that reports appear an hour or so after a change has been made (and may sometimes be delayed up to 24 hours).
To change your payment information, or other account details after you've signed up you'll need to go to the main AdSense site and log in to your account there.
